What is breast augmentation surgery?

Breast augmentation surgery consists of raising the breast and inserting either a saline-filled or silicone implant underneath the breast tissue or the chest muscle.

At Heartland Plastic and Hand Surgery in Cape Girardeau, MO, incisions for the implants are made in the fold along the lower part of the breast, along the lower half of the skin around the areola, or in the armpit. After the incision is made, the implant is inserted and then tweaked to the right size and proportion before it is closed.

Breast augmentation at Heartland Plastic and Hand Surgery in Cape Girardeau is performed under general anesthesia, and the recovery time varies according to the placement (submuscular or subglandular) of the implants and the amount of breast tissue you had prior to the procedure. Most patients tolerate the procedure with only moderate discomfort for a few days.

Can I see before and after pictures of people in the Cape Girardeau area who had breast augmentation?

During your consultation visit, your surgeon will show you before and after pictures of patients who underwent a breast augmentation. You will be able to see firsthand the difference the procedure made for these people.

What is the average cost of breast augmentation at Heartland Plastic and Hand Surgery in Cape Girardeau, MO? Is there a charge for the consultation?

The average cost of a saline breast augmentation is $4590 (effective June 1, 2009). If silicone implants are inserted, the average cost is $5465 (effective June 1, 2009). There is an $85 charge for the consultation. The consultation charge is deducted from the price of the procedure if you decide to schedule the surgery within 6 months. After 6 months, a new consultation may be scheduled to review any changes in your medical history.

Is financing available? And will insurance cover any of my fees?

Heartland Plastic and Hand Surgery in Cape Girardeau accepts several types of payments. They are cash, credit cards (Visa, Master Card, Discover and American Express), money order, cashier checks and financing with an outside agency. Cosmetic breast augmentation is not covered by commercial insurance and will need to be paid in full before surgery. Make sure to arrange financing with a financing company of your choice before surgery.

On average, how many breast augmentations are performed in a year at Heartland Plastic and Hand Surgery?

Each year can vary, but over the last 5 years the average is 120 breast augmentation surgeries per year.

Will it cost more if I decide to go submuscular or by incision site?

The surgeron does not increase his fee to insert the implant in a submuscular position. We do most breast augmentations by placing the implant in a submuscular position; however, during your initial breast implant consultation at Heartland Plastic and Hand Surgery, he will recommend which position will work best for your body.

Regarding incision site, we use three different incision sites: the inframmary fold (breast crease), periareolar (around areola), and axillary (arm pit). The selection of the incision site will be determined after an exam of your breasts and after listening to your concerns regarding scarring. The surgeon will give his recommendation to the patient during the consultation visit at his office in Cape Girardeau.

Is there a better time of year to have the surgery performed?

You should schedule the surgery during a time when you can allow yourself to heal. After breast augmentation surgery, you will have a 10-15 pound lifting restriction for at least 10 days following surgery. (That will include lifting children.) You also have to make adjustments at your place of work due to pain, swelling and being on pain medication. In some cases, patients with desk jobs can have the procedure done over a long weekend. There are other jobs, such as hairdressers or massage therapists who need to take up to two weeks off.

Is there anything I need to do to get myself ready for breast implant surgery at Dr. Dresher’s office in Cape Girardeau?

To reduce bruising and the risk of hematoma, you must stop taking blood thinners and vitamin E at least one week before and after surgery. If you are on prescription blood thinners, you may need to get medical clearance from your family doctor as well as instructions on how to stop these medications. We also want all herbal medication and diet pills (prescription and over-the-counter) stopped at least two weeks before surgery and one week following.

In Cape Girardeau, Missouri, cosmetic surgeries are elective procedures. The patient must be in overall good health before the surgery can be performed. If there are questions regarding your health, medical clearance from your family doctor may be required.
