Neck Lift

What is a neck lift?

A neck lift is a term for a set of different techniques that lift and tighten the neck muscle, remove excess skin and flatten wrinkles, get rid of bands around the neck, and define the jaw. It may involve removing part of the platysma muscle or simply removing the extra skin that comes with age or large weight loss.

Incisions for a neck lift are usually done behind the ears as well as small incisions just under the chin. Muscles in the neck are tightened, often light liposuction is done if there is excess fat, and the extra skin is removed. The result is a nicely defined chin and neckline free of wrinkles and bands.

A neck lift is usually performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure at Heartland Plastic & Hand Surgery and can take from two to four hours to complete depending on the degree of work done.

Would definitely recommend it, they went out of their way to make sure I was comfortable, and even when I had an emergency regarding finances due to my bank they made it a point to stay open later than they had to until I had it straightened out. Is financing available? And will insurance cover any of the fees?

Heartland Plastic & Hand Surgery will accept most types of payment including cash, credit cards (Visa, Master Card, Discover, and American Express), money orders, cashier checks, and even financing from an outside agency. Neck lifts are not usually covered by insurance carriers and payment must be received in full before the date of surgery. Ensure that all financial arrangements are made in advance with a finance company of your choice.

Do I have to stop smoking before a neck lift procedure?

Yes, Dr. Humphrey requires the patient to stop smoking one month before surgery and one month after surgery. Nicotine in cigarettes, vapes, and other tobacco products decreases the blood supply to the skin, and blood supply is important to the healing process. We also require patients to eliminate secondhand exposure to all tobacco and marijuana products for the same duration.

Is there anything I need to do to get myself ready for surgery?

You must stop taking any blood thinners, vitamin E, and all other herbal supplements at least two weeks before and after surgery. You may need to obtain medical clearance from your primary care physician as well as consultation on how to stop these medications. Any herbal medication and diet pills, whether prescription or over-the-counter, should be stopped at least two weeks before as well.

In addition, it is important that sun exposure is reduced for several weeks before surgery so as to avoid any damage to the skin just prior to the procedure. It may also be advised that you lower your alcohol intake for a short period of time. Patients are required to be in good health in general before an elective cosmetic procedure is performed at Heartland Plastic & Hand Surgery in Cape Girardeau. If there are any questions remaining about your health, we may require medical clearance from your primary care doctor.

Are there different types of neck lifts and how do I determine what is best for me?

A neck lift can be combined with light liposuction to reduce the amount of fat in the neck, or the skin around the neck can simply be trimmed away to define the neckline and reduce wrinkles. Sometimes patients opt to combine a facelift with a neck lift to rejuvenate the whole region. Heartland Hand & Plastic Surgery will consult with you to determine which procedure fits your needs best. Our aim is to achieve the best possible aesthetically pleasing result with the least invasive procedure and the least amount of scarring. Arrange a consult to decide what type of neck lift is the best for you.

Is there a better time of year to have the neck lift performed?

It is important that you pick a time for your procedure that will allow enough downtime to heal afterward. It can take three to six weeks to recover from a neck lift and you will need to take time off of your regular schedule to allow for the healing process. You will need to make some temporary changes at work and at home due to standard components of the healing process such as swelling and taking pain medication.
