What is Botox®?
Botox® is a prescription drug that is injected into muscles to improve the look of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines), on the forehead, and around the eyes. At Heartland Plastic & Hand Surgery, Botox® is an injectable cosmetic neuromodulator used to improve your face and make it look more attractive and more youthful. Botox® relaxes the tiny facial muscles linked to expression and prevents them from contracting. After a Botox® procedure, the overlying skin remains silky and unwrinkled, while the untreated muscles contract normally. Heartland Plastic & Hand Surgery has been the Cape Girardeau area’s leading Botox provider for 20 years and counting.
With real, noticeable results, no surgery, and no downtime, Botox® has been the treatment of choice for millions of patients and their doctors.

If you have noticed that wrinkling between your eyebrows is making you look older than you really are, you may be a perfect candidate for Botox® treatments to improve the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines between your eyebrows (glabellar lines), on your forehead, and around your eyes. If just looking more refreshed and healthier is your goal, Botox® injections are the right choice for you. Together with an injector at Heartland Plastic & Hand Surgery, you will decide if you are the right candidate for Botox® injections.
How is Botox® administered?
Botox® is directly injected into the muscles between the eyebrows, around the eyes, and on the forehead. It is injected only by our board-certified plastic surgeon or board-certified physician assistant. Upon injection, Botox® blocks nerve impulses to the muscles that are being treated. This reduces muscle movement that causes the development of moderate to severe lines between the brows, on the forehead, and around the eyes. Please arrive early to be seated in a private room where ice packs and numbing cream are available for no additional charge.
What can I expect after injections with Botox®?
Within a few days, you will notice a striking improvement in the treated areas. Lines continue to improve for up to 30 days. Noticeable improvement can last up to 4 months. Your own results may vary. Be sure to talk to your Heartland Plastic & Hand Surgery specialist about what you can reasonably expect.
Localized pain, inflammation, tenderness, swelling, redness, and bleeding/bruising have occasionally been reported. These side effects of Botox® injections usually fade away within a couple of days. Heartland Plastic & Hand Surgery‘s Medical Spa patients returned to their regular activities immediately.
Heartland Plastic & Hand Surgery consultants will advise you on how to treat your skin after the Botox® procedure and will set up a follow-up appointment before you leave.

Unlike other providers, master injectors have extensive training in safety, facial anatomy, the risks and benefits of individual products, and creating a customized treatment plan to help patients reach their goal results. At Heartland Plastic Surgery, our master injector, Dr. J. Stewart Humphrey, MD, is a board-certified plastic surgeon with many years of experience in the Cape Girardeau area.
As a master injector, Dr. Humphrey is credentialed to deliver excellent results and ensure a patient’s health and safety when providing dermal fillers or Botox. Master injector training builds on his expertise in plastic surgery, offering patients superior results. Dr. Humphrey understands how to avoid the “frozen” look that improper Botox injections can result in or the “overfilled” look of improper dermal filler injections. Instead, patients enjoy excellent, natural-looking results tailored to their unique facial anatomy and aesthetic preferences.
