What is labiaplasty?
Often referred to as aesthetic vaginal rejuvenation surgery, labiaplasty is performed on women for a variety of reasons, not all of which are strictly aesthetic. The procedure removes protruding tissue from the genital area. Specifically, portions of the labia minora (or the inside lips of the vulva) and/or the labia majora (the outer and typically larger-sized lip) are targeted. Aesthetic labia minora reduction or aesthetic vaginal labioplasty can significantly increase confidence and comfort simultaneously.
Who is a good candidate for labiaplasty?
The best candidates are women who suffer from an elongated labia and who endure irritation, tenderness, or pain from it during normal activities. If the labia minora are stretched out there is a risk of infection and chafing. Labiaplasty is recommended in these cases; alternatively, clitoral hood reduction may be recommended in cases where the cosmetic surgery needs to target the clitoris.
Labiaplasty may also be appropriate if there is pinching or pain during intercourse. If there is embarrassment due to one’s appearance when sitting or when wearing tight pants or a swimsuit, labiaplasty may help solve these issues. Whether it is due to pregnancy, childbirth, or aging, this surgery offers an excellent opportunity for vaginal restoration. However, the labiaplasty procedure is not intended to tighten the vagina; its sole focus is on removing excess labial tissue.

Can labiaplasty be done before pregnancy?
An adult woman of any age can undergo labiaplasty surgery, as the changes made during the procedure do not interfere with or complicate either pregnancy or childbirth. However, as childbirth could cause vaginal changes, a woman of childbearing age may choose to reconsider the time of the procedure until they are finished having children.
What are the different types of labiaplasty?
There are a variety of labiaplasty procedures available, depending on the needs of each patient. If you are unsure, consult with Dr. Humphrey to determine the best procedure for your needs.
What happens during a labiaplasty?
First, anesthesia is used to eliminate the possibility of pain during the procedure. Once the patient is sedated the area where the tissue will be removed is gently marked. Using surgical glasses for magnification, the doctor will delicately remove the designated skin and tissue. Immediately following the procedure is a brief period in a recovery room where progress is monitored.
What is the recovery process after labiaplasty?
It is typical to remain numb after surgery, which may last the entire day. An antibiotic ointment should be used as protection against infection as well as to aid the healing process. Being careful and cautious can help ensure stitches remain intact and undamaged. Further instructions for healing and recovery considerations are given upon returning home. Additionally, it is advised to remain home from work for a few days, avoiding any strenuous activities for several weeks.
Will insurance cover a labiaplasty?
Since labiaplasty is considered a cosmetic procedure, it is often not covered by insurance. In order to make this procedure affordable, our office accepts several types of payment options. They are cash, credit cards (Visa, Master Card, Discover, and American Express), money orders, cashier checks, and financing with an outside agency. We require that financing arrangements be in place before surgery.
