Breast Lift and Augmentation

What is a breast lift and breast augmentation?

Breast lifts are often done in combination with breast augmentations to achieve the most desirable effect and rejuvenate the whole bust area. It can correct size discrepancies in breasts and issues such as sagging to give patients a tighter, more appealing figure.

During the breast lift surgery, also known as mastopexy, excess skin is removed from around the areola and occasionally from the bottom of the breast. The skin is then rearranged to tighten the skin envelope. The nipple and areola are elevated to a more natural position.

Breast lifts can correct sagging or stretching that occurs from natural events like age and pregnancy or from a large weight gain or loss. It is a straightforward procedure done under general anesthesia and usually takes only 1-2 hours to perform.

After the breasts have been raised, breast augmentation (breast implants) can be added to the procedure with relative ease. A saline-filled or silicone implant is placed underneath the breast tissue or the chest muscle with incisions in the fold along the lower part of the breast, along the lower half of the skin around the areola or even in the armpit. The implant is adjusted to the right size and proportion before closing the incision. Breast augmentation is done under general anesthesia, and recovery time varies according to the placement of the implants and the amount of breast tissue present before the procedure. Usually, recovery involves only moderate discomfort for a matter of days.

What is breast augmentation using Vectra 3D?

The Vectra 3D camera allows you to see what your body would look like with different sizes and types of implants. You can also get a feel for what a breast lift would look like in conjunction with the augmentation. Vectra software allows patients to see the exact size and position of each breast, and since asymmetry is very common, your surgeon can plan to compensate if necessary.

“Wonderful experience. Would definitely recommend it, they went out of their way to make sure I was comfortable, and even when I had an emergency regarding finances due to my bank they made it a point to stay open later than they had to until I had it straightened out. They make sure that you understand everything that it is done and it’s a huge confidence booster!”

“I had breast implants in 2011 and had very little pain – recovering in 4 days and returning to work. In 2013 I had a facelift and I’m very happy with the results. I ” hibernated” during healing, and everyone thinks I look well rested and happy.”

Do I have to stop smoking before a breast lift and breast augmentation procedure?

Yes, Dr. Humphrey requires the patient to stop smoking one month before surgery and one month after surgery. Nicotine in cigarettes, vapes, and other tobacco products decreases the blood supply to the skin, and blood supply is important to the healing process. We also require patients to eliminate secondhand exposure to all tobacco and marijuana products for the same duration.

Will it cost more if the breast augmentation is submuscular or by incision site?

There is no increase in fee to insert breast implants in a submuscular position as that is how most of our augmentations are performed. During your initial consultation, your surgeon will discuss which position is best for you and your unique body type. Likewise, the selection of the incision site will be determined after examination of your breasts and after taking into account your concerns regarding scarring.

Is there a better time of year to have a breast augmentation and breast lift performed?

You should choose a date when you will have the optimal amount of time to heal. After breast augmentation surgery, you will have a 10-15 pound lifting restriction (including children) for at least 10 days following the procedure. You also need to make adjustments to your work or home life due to standard recovery factors like swelling and being on pain medication. In some cases, patients can have the procedure done over a long weekend, but in other cases, patients may need to take a couple of weeks off.

Is there anything I need to do to get myself ready for surgery?

You must cease taking any blood thinners and vitamin E at least two weeks before surgery to reduce bruising and the risk of hematoma. You may need medical clearance from your doctor and instructions on how to stop these medications if you are on prescription blood thinners. We also need all herbal medications or diet pills (prescription and over-the-counter) stopped at least two weeks before and one week following surgery. Overall, the patient must be in good health to have an elective cosmetic procedure performed. If there are any questions regarding your health, it may require medical clearance from your primary care doctor.

How do I know which type of breast lift is better for me, and whether I need an implant at the same time as my breast lift?

There are four main types of incisions used for a breast lift. These include crescent lift, periareolar, periareolar with a vertical component (lollipop), and full breast lift (anchor incision). Our expert surgeons will do a series of measurements to determine the degree of drooping, or ptosis, of the breast and select the right incision for your surgery. The goal is always to achieve the most aesthetically pleasing result with the least amount of scarring. Likewise, the surgeons will listen to all of your concerns and goals during your consultation to determine whether implants are best to achieve your desired results.
